Radiology Director - West Market University Hospitals Broadview Heights, OH
The Great Resignation or Attrition has over the last several years had a significant impact on radiology and the healthcare market. It has become more difficult to recruit and retain quality talent resulting in a potential patient, staff, and organizational risks. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified this impact and experts believe it may last for years. In an effort to position ourselves to address this impact and ensure proper team, patient, and organizational care, radiology leaders must concentrate on retaining and recruiting quality talent. With a shortage of trained staff, the answer cannot be to let people resign and then try to replace them. While an immediate strategy seems to revolve around money, i.e. increased hourly rates and retention bonuses, leaders must dig deeper to identify ways to work with staff to address their concerns, otherwise run the risk of existing team members looking to competitors for increased flexibility, work/life balance, and personal well-being. Student-centric recruitment strategies are needed to bring in new talent to fill vacancies due to attrition or unsuccessful retention efforts. Whether retaining existing talent or recruiting external candidates to your organization, radiology leaders must understand what job essentials support employees' and candidates’ long-term needs and consistently improve on them. This presentation will identify and communicate the potentially negative patient, technologist, and organizational impacts resulting from radiology recruitment and retention failures. It will also share successful strategies developed and implemented to mitigate these negative impacts.
